What it is
For any four consecutive frets, the index finger covers the lowest, middle the next, ring the next, pinky the highest. One finger per fret.
Why it matters
It is the posture that makes scales, box shapes, and position-based playing work. Without it, your pinky stays weak and you end up shifting position constantly.
How to practice
- Pick a starting fret (fret 5 is comfortable). Fingers 1-2-3-4 go on frets 5-6-7-8 of the E string.
- Play each note with alternating right-hand fingers: 1, 2, 3, 4, then 4, 3, 2, 1. Keep every finger that has already played down until you move back.
- Do this string by string: E, A, D, G.
- The pinky is the weakest finger. Use it. Do not substitute ring finger.
- Watch your left thumb: it stays behind the neck, roughly opposite your middle finger. Not hooked over the top.
Five minutes a day for a few weeks and this stops feeling awkward.
